Coffs Harbour Bypass Value Engineering

The project includes a 12 km bypass of Coffs Harbour from south of Englands Road intersection to Korora Hill in the north and a two-kilometre upgrade of the existing Pacific Highway between Korora Hill and Sapphire.

The project would provide a four-lane divided highway that bypasses Coffs Harbour, passing through the North Boambee Valley, Roberts Hill ridge and then traversing the foothills of the Coffs Harbour basin to the west and north to Korora Hill. Access to the bypass would be via the three proposed interchanges.

ROLE

Alignment lead on behalf of Arup to work within the Arup / TfNSW working team to identify cost saving opportunities on the Concept Design prior to Tender Documents being released to the public.  Praxis also provided a Principal Road Designer into the team to run 3d road design optimisations and quantity determination exercises to understand where major costs could be reduced. These roles included:

  • Key stakeholder engagements through the design stage;
  • Major road alignment design Value Engineering across disciplines to understand where costs could be reduced;
  • Construction Staging designs;
  • Digital Engineering including weekly Navisworks outputs for team collaboration;
  • Worked closely with senior RMS representatives, developing relationships and gaining trust.

ADDED VALUE

  • Praxis provided significant value to the Arup design team by supplying key resources to allow Value Engineering exercise and Reference Design documentation completed to allow Tender to commence;
  • Identified a number of cost saving opportunities, predominantly through the reduction in bulk earthworks and pavement optimisations. This was achieved through detailed alignment reviews and amendments, allowing a number of significant slope stabilised walls to be removed;
  • Detailed quantity outputs to TfNSW Pay Items breakdown to allow detailed cost estimates to be determined.
